The production, use and disposal of toxic chemicals and synthetic materials have increased the risk of exposure to toxins dangerous to health. The causal relationships between toxic chemicals and various diseases are well established. However, many patients present chronic symptoms associated with exposure to toxins before the manifestation of specific diseases in advanced stages. One of the processes by which the body eliminates toxins is enzymatic detoxification in the liver. A reliable biomarker for exposure to toxic chemicals is urinary D-glucaric acid. Such exposures stimulate the enzymatic pathway of glucuronic acid and the production of D-glucaric acid, which is an indirect by-product of chemical exposure and phase I detoxification reactions.
The urinary level of mercapturic acids indicates the degree of activity or detoxification capacity in phase II. Mercapturic acids are the final excretion products of detoxification, including various functionalized xenobiotics that have been conjugated with glutathione or L-cysteine before excretion. Low levels of mercapturic acids indicate insufficient levels of glutathione and/or cysteine. When the formation rate of functionalized xenobiotics (phase I) exceeds the detoxification capacity of phase II, stronger toxins accumulate in the body.
The human body tries to eliminate xenobiotics (foreign chemical substances) through a concerted process of enzymatic "functionalization" (phase I) and conjugation (phase II). The non-invasive test only requires a single urine collection in the first void of the morning (FMV). This test does not replace complete liver tests for cases of advanced liver disease.
